Vasa: The race is on

TRAVERSE CITY — The Vasa is a go.

Planners for the 36th annual North American Vasa said today that the cross-country ski race will continue as planned Saturday and Sunday.

The race was in jeopardy after a mild winter season and minimal snowfall, but two work bees in recent days repaired thin spots on the course. Organizers decided to proceed based on a forecast of colder temperatures and light snow before the weekend event.

Planners said course modifications are possible as the week progresses based on conditions. As of Tuesday, the only change was to the 50 km race, which is now a two-lap event.

Skiers can monitor trail conditions online at www.vasa.org, where they can also register for the race until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Gwizdz: Big walleye scarce on Houghton Lake

It didn’t take long before I had a bite and reeled in a walleye. It was too small to keep, slightly longer than 14 inches, but it set a trend. Over the next hour we caught five more walleyes and only the sixth exceeded the 15-inch mark.

Oubre, Seward claims 10K titles

For Sophie Seward, it was not a bad consolation prize. The 15-year-old had her sophomore track season at Indiana’s Eastbrook High School end early last week when she failed to qualify in the 3,200 for this Friday’s state high school finals. So she joined her father in running the Bayshore on Saturday and won the 10K instead.

New hockey league aims for 14 teams

The Midwest Junior Hockey League that is slated to start up for the 2012-13 season is expected to have at least 14 teams. League commissioner Pat Pylypuik said Traverse City and Bloomington, Ind., are the first two confirmed cities for the newly-forming Tier III league.

TC takes home opener over Windy City

Light-hitting Traverse City outfielder Brian Heere hit the first home run of the season in Wuerfel Park, helping the Beach Bums to a home opener victory over Windy City. “I don’t think anybody would have bet on me getting the first one out,” Heere said. “It was a line drive and it just kept carrying.”

Davis takes aim at record

The longest-standing Bayshore record could be in jeopardy this morning. Jeff Sharp set the men’s marathon record of 2 hours, 17 minutes, 40 seconds in 1983. That time still stands. Among those taking aim at that mark today: Jesse Davis, who ran a 2:18:47 in the 2011 Houston Marathon.
