Flagg homers twice in Bums’ 12-2 rout

Traverse City belts four homers in 12-2 romp

TRAVERSE CITY — Jeff Flagg had two of the Traverse City Beach Bums' four home runs in a 12-2 rout Saturday of Schaumburg.

The victory is Traverse City's sixth straight, and extends their East Division lead to 4.5 games over Southern Illinois.

Flagg put the Beach Bums up 2-0 with a two-run homer after Chase Burch led off the inning with a single. Kyle Colligan — who doubled — would later score when catcher Mike Valadez dropped the third strike to TC's Marcus Nidiffer, who was able to get to first before the throw.

In the third, Flagg hit another two-run shot, bringing in Brian Heere this time.

Ryan Still piled on more runs in the fourth, hitting a three-run shot for his second of the year. Jose Vargas added another blast in that frame, a solo shot that made the score 9-1.

Vargas walked in a run in the sixth, and Heere and Still came across on an error on a Flagg fly to right field.

Vargas extended his lead to two in the league's home run race with 26 and is up by five in the RBI category.

Scott Dunn earned the win to improve to 5-3. He allowed only three hits and two walks in six innings, striking out five.

Bennett Whitmore picked up his first save of the year, tossing the final three innings without giving up a hit and striking out three.

After facing Schaumburg today, the Beach Bums are off Monday before hosting a pair of three-game series.
