Candidate Hoekstra plans Super Bowl ad

EAST LANSING — U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra is planning to air his campaign's first television ad during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The former congressman issued a statement Friday saying the ad was planned. It's expected to air in Michigan.

The Republican is working to fend off two other conservatives for the chance to run against Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow.

Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer said in an advisory about the ad that it suggests Hoekstra knows he has an image problem.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder got a boost in name recognition in 2010 from a Super Bowl ad while running for governor. The ad labeled Snyder as "one tough nerd."
