Proposal would add 8 casinos

LANSING — A campaign seeking to open eight new casinos in Michigan, including one in Wexford County, is cleared to begin collecting voter signatures aimed at making the November ballot.

The Board of State Canvassers on Tuesday approved the size, lettering and other physical features of petition forms that will be circulated by a coalition called Citizens for More Michigan Jobs.

Supporters of the campaign would have to collect more than 300,000 voter signatures to make a statewide ballot.

Among the locations that would get new casinos through the proposal are Detroit, Pontiac, Grand Rapids and Romulus. Others would be in Birch Run, Macomb County's Clinton Township, Wexford County's Clam Lake Township and DeWitt Township in the Lansing area.

The proposal will draw opposition from some of the owners of Michigan's 25 existing casinos.
