Kilpatrick expresses 'love' for ex-paramour

DETROIT (AP) -- Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says he still loves his former paramour and remains strong despite being persecuted by those who are disappointed that he wasn't destroyed by a text-messaging sex scandal and criminal charges that drove him from office.

The Detroit News reports that Kilpatrick told The Final Call, the Nation of Islam's newspaper, that he has not talked to Christine Beatty, but he still cares about her "very deeply."

The Final Call on Monday posted a video excerpt of the interview on its Web site.

Kilpatrick also said that Detroit "is a very racially separated city" and has never healed from the race riots of the 1960s. He said that while he was mayor, he and his family received death threats.

Kilpatrick resigned as mayor in September 2008. He owes the city $914,000 in restitution.
