BAY CITY — A 180-pound black bear that was relocated after apparently trying to take up residence in a hole along Interstate 75 in Michigan has died after being struck by a vehicle.
The Bay City Times reports officials used a tranquilizer to sedate the animal last Wednesday before pulling it from the hole in Bay County's Fraser Township, about 100 miles northwest of Detroit. WNEM-TV reports the bear was struck about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday along a smaller road in the county.
Authorities say the 2-year-old bear was so badly injured that it had to be euthanized. The driver of the vehicle wasn't hurt in the collision.
After being tranquilized last week, the bear was fitted with a GPS tracking device. The DNR tracked the bear near I-75 again before it was struck.
