Northern Notes: Rider thanks bus driver

Joseph Herhager, of Traverse City, was on the Cherriot BATA bus going to Radio Shack at the Grand Traverse Mall recently when he had what he described as a “medical episode.”

Joseph would like to thank bus driver Scott for his prompt action that possibly saved Joseph’s life.

“Scott called the ambulance to take me to the hospital where I was treated,” Joseph said.

Joseph thinks Scott deserves a huge thank-you and some recognition for reacting so quickly.

The oncology staff at Munson Medical Center wrote to thank those who add to the comfort of the cancer patients on C4 at Munson.

“We have wonderfully talented and compassionate women who brighten hospital stays for those we care for,” the staff wrote. “Karen Daldine and ‘The Cut-Ups’ from Copemish create the most beautiful quilts. Eighty-one-year-old Lois Miller puts together quilts and her quilting group from Grawn United Methodist Church ties the quilts. Margie and the girls from Pine Grove Church make wonderful neck pillows for our patients, (and) Sharon Hillquist and the Benzonia Club stitch wonderful sateen pillowcases.”

In 2010, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ “Adopt-A-Forest” program identified Grand Traverse County as the No. 1 illegal dump site county in the state.

Following efforts in the fall of 2010, Grand Traverse County was removed as the No. 1 illegal dump site location, and after a June 2011 cleanup of all identified illegal dump sites in Blair Township, only a few identified sites remain.

The June Blair Township cleanup effort was spearheaded by Blair Township Supervisor Pat Paul. With help from Blair Township staff and a team of volunteers, two 30-yard containers were filled with tires, carpeting, box springs and mattresses, old furniture, and even a hot tub and an 18-foot fiberglass boat.

Blair Township staff who volunteered to help with the cleanup were Pat Pahl, Aaron Plowman, Lynette Wolfgang, Lisa Guerrieri, Brenda DeKuiper, Carl Bearinger and Nicole Blonshine.

Volunteers from the community were Dave Cook, Mike Triplett, Kim Smith, Bill Eisner, Jackie Kaschel, Paul Kaschel, Tori Kaschel, Nikki Kaschel, Julie Elliot-Eickenroth, Misty Wright, Laura Guerin, Nathan Bildeaux, Darren Zywicki, Grant Hoxie, Raymond Philo, George Clooney, Duane Boroughf, Maria Ferman, Shawn Kaho, Sue Pahl, the Boys Scouts from Troop #37, and Bob Osterhout and Kim Elliott from Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery.

Paul Kaschel donated the use of a tractor. Ed Rosinski and Tri-Turf donated bags to fill with trash, and American Waste donated a container used in the collection of the trash.
