Police fatally shoot man with knife

GRAYLING — Authorities in northern Michigan said a man who pulled out a knife on police has been fatally shot.

The Crawford County sheriff's office said a deputy and a Grayling officer were attempting to serve a court order Friday when the shooting occurred. The statement did not indicate which officer fired the fatal shot.

The victim's name has not been released. Sheriff Kirk Wakefield said Michigan State Police would handle the investigation.

Democrats get 2 chances to vote

DEARBORN — The Michigan Democratic Party is changing course and allowing Democrats to vote in the Feb. 28 presidential primary and also participate in the May caucus.

The change was announced Saturday. Party Chairman Mark Brewer says there's no need to have President Barack Obama's name on the primary ballot, but the secretary of state insists it must be there under Michigan law.

Democratic Party rules bar votes by the same person in a primary and a caucus. But Brewer said the rule won't be enforced in Michigan.

Democrats will meet May 5 to support Obama and pick delegates for the national convention, which is set for September.

College seeks aid for aquarium

SAULT STE. MARIE — A team of students and faculty at Lake Superior State University in the Upper Peninsula is trying to expand the school's 160-gallon saltwater aquarium display.

The school said donations are being sought for the project and will be matched through Thursday by the Lake Superior State University Fisheries and Wildlife Club.

Donations will be used to buy fish, invertebrates and corals.

The aquarium is in the main lobby of Crawford Hall on the Sault Ste. Marie campus.

Coral grows on a rock wall in the tank, allowing students to observe the complexities of a coral reef.

Copper thieves striking churches

GENESEE TOWNSHIP — Flint-area churches have been hit by thieves who steal air conditioners or break them to get access to valuable copper.

New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church in Genesee Township discovered damage worth $50,000 two weeks ago, Mlive.com reported.

Church trustee Barry Turner said he can't imagine why someone would target a house of worship.

At least 11 air conditioners at area churches have been broken into in the past year at a loss of $175,000.

Genesee Township police said there were no suspects.

Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Flint noticed a damaged air conditioner about three weeks ago. Church elder Lavarne Ross said the thieves seem to be pros.
