Bums win rain-shortened game

Whitmore picks up the victory in seven-inning game

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums won a rain-shortened game with the Lake Erie Crushers 7-4.

The contest was delayed by rain in the seventh inning and called about an hour later.

Bennett Whitmore earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings. Matt Miller earned the save with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work.

It didn't take long for the Beach Bums to get on the board.

After Chase Burch was hit by a pitch and Jeff Flagg walked to lead off the second inning, Burch came in on Sean Gusrang's fielder's choice.

Traverse City tacked on more to that lead in the fourth, as Flagg led off the frame with a solo home run and later Gusrang would score on a Brandon Decker error, Kyle Eveland came across on a Kyle Colligan ground ball and Jose Vargas' RBI single brought home Brian Heere.

Lake Erie would get back two runs in the top of the fifth, but Traverse City responded with a Marcus Nidiffer solo home run in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

The Crushers added two more runs in the sixth, bringing Miller into the game to close out the frame.

Flagg added an RBI single to score Vargas in the sixth.
