William W. Crandall

TRAVERSE CITY — William W. Crandall, 81, of Traverse City and formerly of Gladwin, died peacefully Friday, June 8, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Petoskey, the son of Walter B. and Arleen (Brechiesen) Crandall.

Bill grew up in Bellaire. He was a member of the first six-man football team and basketball team in high school, graduating from Bellaire High School in 1950. He went to college and graduated from CMU with a degree in education.

Bill proudly served in the U.S. Army.

On June 15, 1956, in Flushing, he married the love of his life, Doris J. Jones. Together they made their home in Gladwin for over 50 years.

Bill was a teacher, principal and superintendent of the Gladwin Schools for over 15 years. From there he went to work for Double Day Brothers as a sales representative until his retirement.

Bill was an active member of St. Paul Episcopal Church of Gladwin, where he was a leader and the treasurer for many years. He was also involved with the Gladwin Rotary Club and on the Gladwin City Planning Commission for many years.

Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Sugar Springs Golf Community and also the Monday night library club.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; his children, Julie Ann Crandall, of Traverse City, Jeffery William Crandall, of Alden, and Thomas Lynn (Brenda) Crandall, of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Kaila Lynn, Mitchell Adam and Broc Thomas; and brother, James (Margaret) Lynn, of Galesburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at 11 a.m., at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with Pastor Gary Bekkering officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire. The family will receive friends Monday, June 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., also at the funeral home.
