Prep Roundup: Central wins Cadillac Invite

St. Francis sweeps Elk Rapids in tennis

CADILLAC -- Coming off a loss to rival Traverse City West on Tuesday, Traverse City Central bounced back in a big way Thursday to win the Cadillac Volleyball Invitational.

The Trojans (12-1) beat Alma 25-14, 23-25, 15-10 for the title.

In pool play, TC Central beat Reed City (25-14, 25-13), Freeland (25-10, 25-14) and Hart (25-12, 25-15) before topping Roscommon (25-14, 17-25, 15-11) and Midland (25-23, 25-19) in the bracket.

Laura Spencer had 62 kills and 16 blocks for the Trojans, Meredith Aja added 52 kills, Carly Beers had 131 assists and Maddy Connick added 25 digs.

Forest Area won the silver bracket with a 25-14, 25-17 win over Chippewa Hills.

The Warriors (10-3) beat Glen Lake (25-14, 25-20) in pool play, but then lost to Roscommon (25-15, 21-25, 15-13) and Alma (25-18, 25-22). They beat Reed City (25-21, 25-12) and Lake City (25-16, 25-18) in the brackets.

Katie Hodges had 105 assists and 40 digs, Chelsea Scrine had 30 kills and 47 digs, Mae Johnson had 40 kills and 36 digs while Kassie McGee had 23 kills and nine aces.

Glen Lake fell to Chippewa Hills in the silver pool semifinals 25-13, 25-19.

For the tourney, the Lakers were led by Dani Frost (25 kills, 31 digs, three blocks, six aces), Krissy Bush (seven kills, 34 digs, three aces) and Casey Hawkins (34 assists, 14 digs, seven aces).

Northport and Buckley battled to a five-set decision, with the Wildcats emerging as the victors.

Northport won the match 25-27, 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 15-11.

The Bears (3-7) play in Saturday's Kingsley Invitational.

TC St. Francis JV 0

Traverse City Central's junior varsity took a three-set win against the TC St. Francis JVs.

The Trojans won 25-11, 25-14, 25-20, as they were led by Kelsey Coggins (five digs, two aces), Sara Laisure (eight assists, two aces) and Taylor Olson (three kills).

After playing solely in tournaments early in the season, seventh-ranked Traverse City St. Francis downed Elk Rapids 8-0 in its first dual meet of the campaign.

The Gladiators received singles wins from Matt Hughes (6-2, 6-2), Michael Elliott (6-0, 6-1), Mac Corcoran (6-0, 6-1) and Alex Primeau (6-1, 6-3).

Doubles victories were notched by Newton Calcutt/Sean Paquet (6-0, 6-2), Josh Quinlan/Alex Rushlow (6-0, 6-1), Josh Kurtz/Pat Wilson (6-0, 6-0) and Chris Miller/Stephen Siddall (6-0, 6-0).

St. Francis will play in Saturday's eight-team East Kentwood Invitational.

St. Francis nets JV wins

Traverse City St. Francis notched a pair of junior varsity wins over Petoskey.

The St. Francis Blue team topped the Northmen 7-1, while the Gold claimed a 6-3 win.

Winners for the Blue team were Keith Gingrass (6-2, 6-1), John O'Neil (6-1, 6-1) and Steve Knape (6-4, 3-6, 13-11). Petoskey's Brian Gammon won his match 7-6, 4-6, 10-2.

The Glads (3-1) won all four doubles matches, receiving wins by Paul Bandrowski (6-2, 6-1), Tanner Hobbs/Sean Leonard (6-1, 6-0), Alex Grombala/Brendan Barnes (6-3, 6-1) and Cole McCardell/Chase Richards (6-3, 4-6, 10-3).

Gold team victories came from Kolter Hornyak (7-5, 6-2) and five doubles teams -- Danny Barnes/Corey Boudrie (6-4, 6-4), Mike Jenkins/Alex Quinlan (6-0, 6-1), Buddy Eckhoff/Evan Primeau (6-3, 3-6, 10-8), Cole Gingras/Ben Alpers (6-1, 7-5) and Anthony Vozza/Ben Yanksa (6-2, 6-0). Petoskey received singles wins by Hunter Reeve (7-5, 6-4), Brandon Pomeranke (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) and Durand Nixon (6-1, 6-2).

SWIMMING

Jenison takes triangular meet from Central, West

Jenison posted wins over Traverse City Central and TC West in a triangular meet at Jenison.

The Wildcats topped West 207-105 and Central 244-49. West beat Central 196-76.

The Titans met state qualifying times in two events in their first meet of the season. Ellie Maleski's first-place time of 1:03.34 in the 100 backstroke met the state's guideline, as did the 200 medley relay team's 1:56.15, good for second in the meet. Maleski, Shelby Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Kate Reed comprise the team.

Other top performers for West were Shea Williams (fourth in 200 free, fourth in 500 free), Newhouse (fourth in 200 individual medley, third in 100 breaststroke), Megan Cepela (second in 50 freestyle, third in 100 free), Maleski (second in 100 butterfly) and Kendall Cox (third in diving).

The 400 freestyle relay team of Maleski, Williams, Kirsten Palmer and Brunner were second in 4:05.84 and the 200 free relay team (Newhouse, Reed, Williams, Palmer) was third in 1:51.66.

Central's leaders were Claire Wodzien (fifth in both 200 and 500 freestyle), Erin Cover (fifth in 100 butterfly) and Michelle Rizor (fourth in diving).

SOCCER

RH Stoney Creek 1
TC West 0

Host Rochester Hills Stoney Creek scored midway through the first half and held on for a 1-0 win over Traverse City West.

The Titans (1-2) had six shots while Eric Nixon made seven saves in net.

West will open its new soccer field on Saturday against Midland. The JV will play at noon while the varsity will go at 2 p.m.

In the JV game, the Titans moved to 4-0 with a 1-0 win over Stoney Creek. Brandon Montgomery netted the West goal.

McBain NMC 0

Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian moved to 3-1 on the season with a 5-0 win over McBain NMC.

Aaron Chatfield had two goals and an assist for the Eagles while Paul Chatfield had a goal and an assist. Steve Thompson and David Thompson added the other two goals.

Josh Fosmore made five saves for the shutout.

Cadillac 2
Elk Rapids 1

Cadillac earned a 2-1 non-conference home win over Elk Rapids.

The Elks (1-3) scored with a minute to go in the match when Justin Veliquette fed Tucker Hogarth for the goal.

Nick Thompson was in net for Elk Rapids and made 26 saves.

The Elks next host Harbor Springs on Monday.

Suttons Bay 0
Gaylord 0

Suttons Bay and Gaylord played to a 0-0 tie in an evenly matched duel.

The Norse (0-2-1) and Blue Devils each took 18 shots. Jared Orban was in net for Suttons Bay.

Next up for Suttons Bay is a home match with Leland on Monday.
