MUSKEGON -- Elk Rapids pushed No. 8-ranked Muskegon Western Michigan Christian to the limit before dropping a 1-0 decision to the defending Division 4 state champions.
"It was a good showing for us," Elks coach Nate Plum said, "but we just came up a little short."
Plum credits his defense of Vern Lalone, Mark Michalski, Connor Dittrich and Greg Manning, as well as goalie Nick Thompson (11 saves), with keeping the Elks (9-6-1) in the game.

Midland 0
Miles Beauchamp scored with less than a minute left to give Traverse City Central a 1-0 non-conference home win over Midland Saturday.
The Trojans (8-5-1) attacked the Midland net when Beauchamp was able to fire a rocket in the the net on a scramble play.
TC Central had twice as many shots as the Chemics. Dane Macdonell made seven saves for the shutout.
John Newland, Luke Gross and Neil Beauchamp led the way for the Trojans on defense.
In the JV match, Midland earned a 3-1 win.
TC Central scored first on a Nick Wright goal, but the Chemics tied the game at the half and posted two more after the break.
Josh Lance was in net for the Trojans while Sean Fabian and Kevin Trippe led the defense.
Northport 3
Harbor Light Christian 2
Northport earned a 3-2 non-conference win Saturday as part of homecoming celebration.
The Wildcats had goals from Max Rayfield, Shane Detweiler and Quenton Buss.
Detweiler, Buss and Evan Morgan added assists for Northport.
Harbor Light Christian had goals from Andrew Fila and Benjamin Cole.

Trojan girls third at Carson City tourney
Facing some of the best teams in the state, Traverse City Central's girls turned in a third-place finish Saturday at the Don Baese Invitational at Carson City-Crystal.
Grand Haven won with 56 poinds, followed by Rockford with 66 and the Trojans with 85.
TC Central's Katie Perkins won the meet in 19 minutes, 14 seconds. Julia Otwell (19:43) was 12th, Maren Bahra (19:44) was 13th and Taylor Mattarella (20:01) was 18th.
In the JV race, Sam Ely (20:04) was second, Allison Ostema (21:36) was 10th and Adrienne Bruden (21:40) was 14th to lead the Trojans to a fourth-place finish.
In the boys' meet, Traverse City West finished 12th with 323 points.
Matt Laylin (17:41) was 52nd, Heath Bristol (17:42) was 53rd, Ray Innis (17:51) was 65th, Sebby Kucera (17:55) was 70th and Miles Ullenbruch (18:07) was 83rd.
West's JV featured Brad Clark (17:58) with an eighth-place finish while Hunter Swogger finished in 18:22.
Kingsley takes wins both divisions at Lake City
Kingsley ruled both the boys and girls meets Saturday at the Lake City Invitational.
In the boys' meet, the Stags finished first with 21 points.
Rasheed Sims (17:28) was the overall champ while Ty Sexton (18:12) was third, Conor Goggin (18:27) was fourth, Tim Lark (18:35) was sixth, Parker Fitzsimmons (18:53) was seventh and Nolan Steiner (19:10) was ninth.
Kingsley's girls won with 18 points.
Kirstin Volkening (20:23) was the meet champ, Samantha Krauss (20:50) was second, Chelsea Gould (21:02) was third, Alex McNair (22:46) was fifth and Casey Mudder (23:04) was seventh.
Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Gabby Kuznicki was sixth in 22:55.
In the JV meet, Lake Leelanau St. Mary had the top two runners with ashley Grant (23:11) and Rachel Amelfanto (25:24).
Aaron Helwig was first in the boys JV meet in 19:45 while Caleb Corson (21:31) was eighth.

Cadillac 2nd, Elks sixth in Big Rapids Invitational
Cadillac narrowly came in second in the Big Rapids Invitational, coming in two points behind champion Greenville.
The Yellow Jackets won with 25 team points.
Elk Rapids was sixth with eight points and Manistee seventh at five.
Aaron Mayes was second at No. 1 singles for the Elks, going 3-1 on the day. His record is now 21-2 for the season.
Max Bauer, Donnie Fedrigon, Sam Naples and doubles tandems Kyle Hoover/Josh Mosher and Billy Wolfington/Dan DeRosha each scored a point for Elk Rapids, which will play in the Twin Bay Invitational on Tuesday in Traverse City.
VOLLEYBALL
Kingsley claims title in Grayling; Warriors 3rd
Kingsley didn't drop a set until the final match Saturday, but still persisted to win the Grayling Invitational.
The Stags (28-2-1) won their third straight tournament with a 25-16, 20-25, 15-7 victory over Kalkaska in the final.
In pool play, Kingsley beat East Jordan (25-20, 25-14), Forest Area (25-18, 25-19) and Central Lake (25-4, 25-16). The Stags also beat Grayling 25-18, 25-11 in the semifinal.
Hannah Bach had 36 kills and 18 blocks for Kingsley while Sam Zubalik had 26 kills and 19 digs. Chelsea Edgcombe had 22 kills and 22 digs, Hilary Hoeflin had 16 digs and 13 aces while Mary Kaleita was 100-percent serving and tallied 82 assists.
Forest Area placed third in the tournament, topping the hosts 25-21, 25-22 in the consolation finals.
The Warriors (19-12-2) topped Central Lake 25-17, 25-17 and East Jordan 25-16, 25-16 in pool play before dropping a three-game match to Kalkaska in the semifinals.
Forest Area was led by all-tournament pick Mae Johnson (30 kills, 23 digs), Molly Lockwood (21 digs), Kassie McGee (10 aces), Chelsea Strine (22 kills), Megan Monks (17 kills) and Kate Hodges (28 assists).
The Warriors hosts Mancelona on Tuesday.
SWIMMING
TC Central finishes fifth at Ogemaw
Traverse City Central swam to a fifth-place finish at the Falcon Invite Saturday with 175 points.
Mt. Pleasant won the meet with 432.
Claire Wodzein won the 200-yard freestyle for the Trojans in 2 minutes, 13.78 seconds. She was also second in the 500 free in 6:05.93.
Michelle Rizor was third in diving with 142.35 points and Megan Dermettan was fifth in the 200 IM (2:53.12).
The 200 free relay team of Dermettan, Wodzein, Rizor and Lauren Rockafellow was third (2:02.61) while Wodzein, Taila Gerstle, Dermettan and Rizor took fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:20.41).
RUGBY

Traverse City's rugby squad controlled the ball for 80 percent of Saturday's game against Flint for a 46-6 win.
Champ Bodell scored on three tries in the second half for the Blues (2-1, 3-1).
Steve Politas, Steve Wilkerson, Harold Holmes, Josh Benghauser, Mike Amon and Shanis Ratukalou all factored into the scoring.
Traverse City will play again at home next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Fort Wayne.
