West nets 8 state qualifiers at swim meet

Eight Traverse City West swimmers posted state-qualifying times at the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association meet.

The Titans were led by the sixth-place 200 medley relay team of Amy Brunner, Shelby Newhouse, Erin Holstad and Elly Maleski at the meet that featured over 65 teams from all divisions competing against each other. The foursome posted a state-qualifying time of 1:43.48.

Newhouse and Holstad both qualified in the 100 breaststroke, with Holstad coming in 10th at 1:10.06 and Newhouse just an eyelash behind at 1:10.2, good for 12th.

Holstad finished 11th in the 100 freestyle at 55.40 and in 18th at 56.55 was Amy Brunner, who also was 16th in the 50 free in 25.53.

Maleski placed 22nd in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.1.

The 200 freestyle relay team -- Maleski, Holstad and the two Brunners -- was 12th.

TC West hosts Spring Lake in a league meet on Thursday. The state finals are Nov. 21 at Eastern Michigan University.

TC West qualifies 4 for swim finals

Traverse City West will swim in four events in todays Division 1 state finals. Elly Maleski led the Titans by qualifying for three events in Fridays preliminary races, including the 200 medley relay with teammates Shelby Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Meghan Cepela.
