Prep Roundup: West swims past Spring Lake

TRAVERSE CITY -- What was supposed to be a close contest Thursday night turned into the opposite.

Traverse City West won nine of the 12 events to easily beat Coastal Conference rival Spring Lake, 122-64.

Spring Lake did leave TC with a victory, topping TC Central.

West swept the three relays and went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle relay, won by the team of Erin Holstad, Shelby Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Elly Maleski in 1:46.12.

Maleski, Newhouse, Amy Brunner and Kate Reed won the 200 medley relay (1:55.29) while Amy Brunner, Sarah Brunner, Holstad and Reed added a victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.42).

In addition to the 200 freestyle relay, the Titans posted 1-2 finishes in four other events.

Amy Brunner won a pair of individual events, taking the 50 freestyle (26.13) and 100 butterfly (1:03.13). Sarah Brunner added a victory in the 200 individual medley (2:22.64).

Also winning events were Kendall Cox in diving (178.3 points), Maleski in the 500 freestyle (5:44.06) and Newhouse in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.09).

Claire Wodzien led TC Central against Spring Lake, taking second in the 50 freestyle (27.9) and 200 freestyle (2:09.21).

Grayling JV 26

Will Grombala scored on touchdown runs of 53, 3 and 33 yards while Riley Bullough added a pair of 7-yard scoring scampers as TC St. Francis topped Grayling 46-26 in a Lake Michigan Conference JV game.

Justin Olm opened the scoring with a 9-yard TD run and later caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Dylan Seybert.

Jack Jamison, Tyler Hansen and Kyle Gallagher were defensive standouts for St. Francis (6-2).

Zane Tobin had a 7-yard TD run and had scoring passes of 23 yards to Tyler Brigham and 8 yards to Steven Enos for Grayling. Riley Zigila had a 12-yard TD pass to David Bergan.

Chippewa Hills 12

Traverse City Central's freshmen clinched a winning season with a 25-12 non-conference win at Remus Chippewa Hills.

The Trojans (5-3) jumped out to a 19-0 lead at the half.

Ryan Verschuren ran for a 10-yard score and picked off two passes on defense, including one he took 95 yards for a touchdown.

Tyler Clark added a 70-yard TD, Boone Marois scored from 2 yards out and Joe Prokes kicked a PAT.

Angel Mariani had two fumble recoveries for TC Central while Andrew West had one. Sem Vovikov also added an interception.

Host Traverse City West earned a 50-0 Big North JV win at Thirlby Field.

David Kirksey scored three touchdowns while Colin Richards, Devyn Powell, Logan Chamberlain and Tao each had one.

Defensively, the Titans (4-4) had two goal-line stands. Airic Clelan and Jordan Nuss each had interceptions.

VOLLEYBALL

East Jordan 2

Elk Rapids was down two games and trailing in the third, but something clicked. The Elks rallied for a five-set win over host East Jordan in Lake Michigan Conference action.

Elk Rapids (5-17-7, 4-5) won 14-25, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-5.

Olivia Morrison had 18 assists for the Elks, Sarah Oppe was 100-percent serving with four digs, Jesse Stoor had six aces 10 kills and seven blocks while Jordanne Niel had six aces and eight kills. Kacey Anderson also had three kills and seven blocks.

TC St. Francis outlasts Boyne City, Kalkaska

Traverse City St. Francis won a pair of five-game Lake Michigan Conference volleyball matches.

The Gladiators (14-14-4, 8-3 LMC) opened with a 22-25, 27-25, 25-15, 23-25, 16-14 win over Boyne City. St. Francis followed with a 18-25, 26-24, 26-28, 25-19, 17-15 triumph over Kalkaska.

Everyone gets a win at Frankfort tri-meet

Frankfort, Marion and Northport each came away with a 1-1 record at Thursday's tri-meet.

The host Panthers beat Northport 25-18, 25-20, but lost to the Eagles 10-25, 25-22, 16-14.

The Wildcats then beat Marion 25-17, 25-16.

Frankfort (15-19) had 17 kills, 16 digs and a block from Laney Euband, Liz Bowman had 10 kills, seven digs and a block while Ally Popp tallied 12 kills, two aces and 15 digs. Maggie Miller set up the offense with 31 assists.

Jo'burg-Lewiston 0

Strong serving and solid hitting powered Pellston to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-7 Ski Valley Conference victory over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

Kara Pavlisin had 10 kills, four blocks and four digs and Amanda Friend seven kills, two blocks, six digs and one ace for the Hornets (25-7-5, 6-1 SVC).

Also contributing to the victory were Katie Dzedzie (six kills, 10 digs, one ace), Nicole Madigan (eight kills, one ace, one block, 11 digs), Emily Maglothin (two kills, five digs, one ace, 23 assists), Chelsea Bonter (two aces, four assists, five digs), Mackenzie Myers (one ace, seven digs) and Cassie LaCost (two aces, four digs).
