West puts 5 in consolation swim finals

YPSILANTI -- Five in four.

Five Traverse City West athletes will compete in the consolation finals in four events at today's Division I swimming and diving state championship.

The Titans finished 16th in the state last season.

"Our girls swam really well," West coach Jessie Houghton said. "We're glad to have both relays in; that was huge.

"The five girls that swan today all swim tomorrow and that's great. We're down here with the best of the best."

The top eight finishers from Friday's preliminaries qualify for today's final, which begins at noon at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Finishers 8-16 from the prelims return for the consolation finals.

West's 200 medley team of Elly Maleski, Shelby Newhouse, Amy Brunner and Erin Holstad qualified 10th with a time of 1:52.49. Amy Brunner, Sarah Brunner, Newhouse and Holstad will swim in the 200 freestyle relay consolation, which qualified 16th with a time of 1:42.97.

The Titans will have two swimmers in the consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke. Newhouse took 14th (1:09.94) and Holstad 16th (1:10.57).

TC West had three entrants in the 100 butterfly on Friday. Maleski was 26th (1:01.83), Amy Brunner 29th (1:02.26) and Sarah Brunner 35th (1:02.71).

Holstad was also 26th in the 100 freestyle (55.49) and Amy Brunner 33rd in the 50 freestyle (25.78).
