Prep Roundup: Leelanau wins first tennis dual

TC Christian beats Glen Lake in soccer, 1-0

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Leelanau co-op team won its first dual match in the first-year program's history, taking home an 8-0 win against the Traverse City Central JV Gold.

The team -- made up of students from Glen Lake, Leland and Leelanau School -- claimed the match held at Traverse City East by sweeping both the doubles and singles flights.

"We're making some history here," coach Bob Sutherland said. "We played a very competitive schedule early on, and we just hope to keep winning."

Leelanau received singles wins from Pedro Machado (6-0, 6-2), Avery Lipman (6-0, 6-0), Casey VanDerwerff (6-4, 6-0) and Eddie Yan (6-2, 6-0).

Doubles victories came from Caleb Abbott/Wyatt Smith (6-1, 6-1), Adam Scarboro/Clay Wolin (6-0, 6-0), Simon Kohler/Andrew Campbell (6-2, 6-0) and Leif VanDerwerff/Matt Brown (6-1, 6-1).

Leelanau hosts Charlevoix on Friday at 4 p.m. in Glen Arbor.

TC West 3

Traverse City St. Francis earned a 5-3 non-conference win over host TC West.

The Gladiators had wins at Nos. 2-4 singles from Michael Elliott (6-1, 6-1), Mac Corcoran (6-3, 6-4) and Alex Premeau (6-3, 7-5).

St. Francis also took No. 1 doubles with Newton Calcutt/Sean Taquet (6-2, 6-3) and No. 3 doubles with Josh Kurtz/Pat Wilson (7-5, 6-2).

The Titans (2-2) had a win at No. 1 singles from Dan Deemer (6-0, 6-3), as well as No. 2 doubles with Joel Collins/Jacob Nestor (6-2, 6-0) and No. 4 doubles with Matt White/Andrew Hartman (6-4, 4-6, 6-3).

Elk Rapids 3

Traverse City Central's Black JV earned a 6-3 win over Elk Rapids.

The Trojans (3-1) won No. 4 singles with Marc Habermann (6-4, 6-0) while sweeping doubles.

Philip Hanawalt/Daniel Fedor (6-1, 6-3), Garrett Kosch/Sean Soupiset (7-6, 6-1), Shawn Roach/Karl Jacobson (6-0, 6-0), Chris Hicks/Alex Hushak (6-0, 6-0) and Keegan Hall/Matt Heimburger (6-0, 6-0) all teamed for wins.

Elk Rapids won the top three singles with Donnie Fedrigon (6-4, 6-4), Kyle Hoover (6-2, 6-1) and Josh Mosher (6-3, 6-3).

St. Francis Blue 3

Traverse City West's JV swept doubles for a 5-3 win over the St. Francis Blue squad.

The Titans had wins from Graeme Placek/Charlie Pacer (6-7, 6-4, 6-4), Kyle Hughey/J.J. Chouinard (6-4, 6-0), Tyler Harris/Max Hughes (6-4, 6-0) and Tyler Markin/Andrew Baker (6-1, 6-3). Carter Payne also won No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-0).

St. Francis had wins from Keith Gingras (6-2, 3-6, 7-6), Steve Knape (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) and Tanner Hobbs (6-4, 1-6, 6-1).

Benzie Central earned a 2-0 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.

Andrew Worden had a goal and an assist for the Huskies (2-2-2)

Sam Porter made 10 saves for the Bears while Erin Hamilton led the defense.

Jason Send scored off a Peter Mustard assist for the game's only goal in a 1-0 Traverse City Christian win over Glen Lake.

Ryan Black made 12 saves for the Lakers, while Jon Rudolph had two for the Sabres (5-1, 3-0 Great Northwest Conference), who host the Christian Cup on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

The round-robin tourney also features Grand Rapids Potter's House, Harbor Light Christian and Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy.

Traverse City Central and TC West played to a 1-1 tie.

Noah Cobb had the goal for the Titans (7-2-1), while Cooper Macdonell scored for the Trojans (5-0-1) off a Colin Lesoski assist.

VOLLEYBALL

Forest Area 3
Gaylord SM 0

Forest Area earned a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 Ski Valley Conference win over Gaylord St. Mary.

The Warriors (12-3, 2-0 SVC) had 24 assists from Katie Johnson, nine kills and 14 digs from Chelsee Strine, nine kills from Mae Johnson, eight digs from Renee Henry and eight kills, six digs and three blocks from Cassie McGee.

Ashley Tzuk and Camille Tornow each had a strong floor game for Forest Area.

Mancelona 3
Bellaire 0

Mancelona earned its first Ski Valley Conference win with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of Bellaire.

The Ironmen (4-8-1, 1-1 SVC) had six kills and 12 digs from Paige Windish, four kills and four digs from Andrea Luton, four kills, 14 digs and three aces from Chantelle Adams and four aces and eight digs from Keisha Nichols.

Charlevoix wins LMC tri

Charlevoix earned a pair of Lake Michigan Conference wins over Kalkaska and Harbor Springs.

The Rayders (9-5-1, 3-1 LMC) beat the Blazers 25-13, 25-17, 25-23 and the Rams 25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19.

Jenna Way had 59 assists, 49 digs and 15 kills for Charlevoix. Katie Mays added 29 kills, Sarah Potter had 17 kills and 28 digs while Allison Hankins had 25 kills and five blocks.

SWIMMING

TC Central, West fall to East Grand Rapids

East Grand Rapids picked up wins over both Traverse City Central and TC West.

The Pioneers beat the Titans 112-70 and the Trojans 13-36.

West had seven runner-up finishes.

Ellie Maleski, Shelby Newhouse, Shea Williams and Megan Cepela teamed for second in the 200 medley relay (1:59.19) while Maleski, Newhouse, Cepela and Kate Reid teamed in the 200 free (1:47.90).

Maleski was second in the 200 IM (2:26.11) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.38), Cepela was second in the 50 freestyle, Williams was second in the 100 backstroke (1:09.6) and Newhouse was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.7).

Saginaw Heritage JV 36
TC West JV 30

Saginaw Heritage completed a long touchdown pass with a minute to go for a 36-30 win over Traverse City West.

The Titans (1-2) had two short touchdown runs from Joey Kniss while Zack Schafer and Ryan Peters also added scores.

TC West was able to force two turnovers on defense.

St. Francis JV 22
East Jordan JV 0

Traverse City St. Francis led 14-0 at the half and held on for a 22-0 win in the Lake Michigan Conference opener.

The Gladiators (2-1) had two 6-yard touchdown runs from Ashton Martenson. Eric Harty had a 14-yard interception return while the team also scored a safety.

Harty, Kyle White, Zach Sweffer and Jack Jamieson led the defense.

Alpena JV 26

Traverse City Central's JV opened the Big North Conference season with a 49-26 win over Alpena.

The Trojans (2-1, 1-0 BNC) had 385 total yards.

Ryan Verschuren had four touchdown runs for Central while Dylan Kelly added two. Sem Novikov had a 59-yard interception return for a score. Russian exchange student Rustam Djaparov kicked six extra points.

Boone Marois also had an interception for the Trojans.

TC Central won the freshman game 34-14.
