TCC 2nd among top teams at own meet

TRAVERSE CITY -- Some of the best tennis teams in the state braved the elements Saturday at the Northwest Michigan Invitational at Traverse City Central.

Birmingham Seaholm -- ranked second in Division 2 -- scored 19 points to win the event, while third-ranked TC Central was second with 18. Grandville (16), Rochester (14) and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (11) rounded out the top five.

"This is easily the strongest field we'll have here all season," Trojans coach Larry Nykerk said. "It's not just Seaholm and us, but Grandville, Rochester and Forest Hills Central too."

TC Central had two flight winners. Maggie Milliken and Amanda Street teamed to win at No. 1 doubles. The year Seaholm, Forest Hills Central and got past Holly 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

At No. 3 doubles, Ellen Whiting and Maddie Connick beat Seaholm, Forest Hills Central and Grandville 6-2, 6-1 in the championship.

Laura Spencer reached the No. 1 singles final with wins over Forest Hills Central and Grand Rapids Christian, but lost to Division 1 defending state champion Kelsey Dieters from Rochester.

Terria Punturo had wins over Rochester and Grandville at No. 2 singles, but finished runner-up after a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Birmingham Seaholm in the final.

And Central's No. 4 doubles team of Claire Wodzien and Chloe Seymour also finished second after wins over Jenison and Rochester, but lost to Seaholm 1-6, 6-2, 10-6.

At No. 4 singles, Audrey Lyman was third with wins over Rochester and Grand Rapids Christian. She had to default her first match as she was gone for a band Solo and Ensemble performance.

Adela Fedor was third at 3 singles with wins over Holly and Forest Hills Central while Grace Amalfitano and Kelly Milliken beat Grand Rapids Christian and Forest Hills Central to finish third at 2 doubles.
