Trojans win JV title in BNC tennis

Traverse City Central won five flights Wednesday to capture the Big North Conference JV tennis title.

The Trojans had 31 points. Traverse City West was second with 18.

Winning flights for Central: Matt Shaw at No. 1 singles, Matt Heimburger at No. 2 singles, Marc Habermann at No. 4 singles, Garrett Kosch and Sean Soupiset at No. 2 doubles and Alex Hushak and Chris Hicks at No. 4 doubles.

West took two flights -- Graeme Placek and Jacob Diss at No. 1 doubles and Tyler Harris and Max Hughes at No. 3 doubles.

Petoskey's Hunter Reeves claimed No. 3 singles.

Paquet, Calcutt earn accolades

The honors keep coming in for Traverse City St. Francis. Fresh off a fifth-place finish in the Division 4 state finals, the Gladiators recently saw their No. 1 doubles team earn All-State honors. St. Francis seniors Sean Paquet and Newton Calcutt were named one of nine doubles teams to earn Division 4 All-State accolades.

Kurtz, Wilson win state tennis title

Josh Kurtz and Patrick Wilson entered the Division 4 state tennis finals Friday as No. 6 seeds in No. 3 doubles. The two emerged Saturday as champions. Kurtz and Wilson swept top-seeded Andrew Sackett and David Goldfarb of Ann Arbor Greenhills to capture the flight.

Glads advance to semis in 3 flights

So far, so good for the Traverse City St. Francis tennis team. The Gladiators advanced to todays Division 4 semifinals at Kalamazoo in three flights -- Mac Corcoran at No. 3, Alex Primeau at No. 4 singles and Josh Kurtz and Patrick Wilson at No. 3 doubles.

6 area teams in tennis finals; 2 in golf

State titles in golf and tennis will be on the line this weekend. And northern Michigan will be well represented. Six local teams will compete in tennis while two teams and four individuals will seek honors in golf. The finals run Friday and Saturday at various sites.

Four area teams bound for tennis finals

Traverse City Central is heading back to the Division 1 state finals. So are St. Francis, the Leelanau co-op and Harbor Springs in Division 3. St. Francis will be making its fifth straight finals appearance, while Leelanau qualified in the team's first year of existence.
