Region a foodie heaven

TRAVERSE CITY — Turns out some people don't realize northwestern Michigan has become quite the food mecca.

Some don't know much at all about the region.

"I love it here; it's beautiful. I never knew," said Lisa Mamounas, a food and art writer for Louise Blouin Media and founder of Culinary Insiders (www.culinaryinsiders.com), which creates events, trips and tours with celebrity chefs around the world. "It's a surprise. How can you not know it's the most beautiful American place? You're much more culinary-oriented than we realize."

Her eyes — and mouth — were opened during a recent "Made in Michigan" Epicurean Experience, hosted by Pure Michigan and starring celebrity chef Mario Batali, a part-time Leelanau County resident.

Journalists toured and ate their way through the region, and sat for a Batali-prepared meal that featured local ingredients, including Beef Braciole "pinwheel style," shown here. The recipe is at www.record-eagle.com/food. For more about the Epicurean Experience, go to Page 9A.
