Five local Masters skiers honored

TRAVERSE CITY — Five local skiers have been named to the U.S. National Masters Cross Country Ski Team based on their performances over the weekend in the North American Vasa.

Named to the team: Eli Brown, Milan Baic, Cliff Onthank, Clark Phelps and Amy Powell.

The American Cross Country Skiers National Masters Championship was held concurrently with the Vasa/Gran Travers races last weekend. The National Masters serves as the U.S. National Championships for citizen skiers 25 and older. Weekend events concluded on Sunday morning with the naming of the honorary U.S. Masters Cross Country Ski Team.

Based on the top individual in each Masters age group, the team was selected using a modified World Cup point system over Saturday's freestyle and Sunday's classic technique. Inclusion on the team is an honorary accomplishment to recognize top performances at the Nationals.
