Roundup: Pellston tops No. 1 Bellaire

Both teams now have one loss in the Ski Valley

PELLSTON — Pellston returned the favor Wednesday night.

The Hornets, ranked No. 3 in Class D, beat top-ranked and previously unbeaten Bellaire 60-51 in a Ski Valley Conference basketball showdown.

Both teams are now 15-1.

Bellaire beat Pellston 75-58 last month when the Hornets were ranked No. 2 and the Eagles No. 3.

Chris Hass paced the Hornets (13-1 in the league) with 30 points. Andy Hamlin added nine.

Mitch Teetzel topped Bellaire with 16 points. Reece Koepke contributed 10.

Pellston led 27-26 at half and 40-37 after three quarters. Bellaire (12-1 in the league) pulled ahead 51-50 in the fourth, but the Hornets closed it out on a 10-1 run.

"We're disappointed," Bellaire coach Stan Sexton said. "But we can pick up the pieces, put it back together and move on."

Bellaire hosts Gaylord St. Mary on Friday. Pellston hosts Onaway on Friday.

Mancelona     61 Gaylord St. Mary     53

Freshman Brandon Dingman led a balanced attack as Mancelona beat Gaylord St. Mary 61-53 in a Ski Valley contest.

Dingman, one of five Ironmen in double figures, scored 15 points. Matt Spyhalski tossed in a game-high 25 for St. Mary (7-8, 6-5), which travels to Bellaire on Friday.

Forest Area     58 Onaway     42

Justin Burke's 22 points, five rebounds and four steals powered Forest Area to a 58-42 Ski Valley victory over Onaway.

Ryan Magee added 14 points and five assists, Austin Vance 10 points and 12 rebounds and Jermaine Nix 11 points for the Warriors (7-7, 6-6).

Carlos Bautista led Onaway with 11 points.

Central Lake     69 Ellsworth     47

Travor Papineau's 18 points led Central Lake to a 69-47 non-league win over Ellsworth.

Zach Harvey added 14 points for the Trojans (9-8), who led 39-23 at half.

Matt Barraw netted 18 points and Jake Seaney 15 for the Lancers (5-9).

Central Lake is at Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday.

Elk Rapids     58 Kingsley     43

Elk Rapids scored 40 points in the middle two quarters en route to a 58-43 non-league win over Kingsley.

Luke Morrison enjoyed another big night for the Elks (11-4), scoring 29 points. Austin McMullen added 12.

The Elks, who led 31-23 at the break, travel to Kalkaska on Friday.

Leland      61 Lake Leelanau SM     58

Leland opened a 14-point lead entering the fourth quarter, then withstood a 3-point barrage, in beating Lake Leelanau St. Mary 61-58 in a non-league game.

Ian Duvall paced the Comets (9-6) with 17 points. A.J. Whittaker added 16.

Richard Herman's 17 points led St. Mary. Nick Shaffran and Joe Pendergast contributed 15 points.

Leland is at Frankfort on Friday.

St. Francis     67 Grayling     24

Cassie Williams and Lauren Buckel scored 14 points apiece as St. Francis got back on the winning track with a 67-24 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Grayling.

The Gladiators (15-2, 11-0) led 29-8 at half.

Kaitlin Feeney added 10 points for St. Francis, which lost to Traverse City Central on Tuesday.

Jo Hamlin's six points topped Grayling (7-10, 3-8). Hamlin injured a knee in the second quarter and did not return.

St. Francis won the JV game 40-14 as Savannah Carroll and Molly Callery netted 10 points apiece.

TC West     3 Cadillac     1

Nick Schultz scored the game-winning goal with 2:04 left in the third period as Traverse City West beat Cadillac 3-1 in a Big North hockey contest.

The Titans (9-11-1) picked up an empty-net goal from Alex Grizzel with five seconds remaining to wrap it up.

Cadillac got on the board first as Joe Gussert, coming out of the penalty box, scored on a breakaway in the first period.

West tied the game with three seconds left in the second period on a Zack Myers tally. Jason Kloosterman and Nate Madigan assisted.

Schultz then broke that tie late in the third off assists from Tyler Thirlby and Grizzel.

"That was a big goal for him," Titans coach Jeremy Rintala said. "He buried it top corner."

The Titans then drew a penalty and Cadillac pulled its goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage. West was able to ice the puck a couple times and then Grizzel, deep in his own end, scored trying to ice it with five ticks left.

Michael Tilford stopped 31 shots in goal for West, which hosts Muskegon Mona Shores on Friady.

Saginaw Heritage     60 TC West     16

Traverse City West lost to Saginaw Heritage 60-16 in a Division 1 regional opener at Midland.

The Titans won three weight classes — Trevor Willnow at 189, Liam Curtis at 285 and Colin Stanley at 125. Willnow and Curtis won by pin, Stanley by a major decision. Willnow, Curtis and James Peck will compete Saturday in the individual regional.
