Roundup: Siddall, McCardel key title win

HARBOR SPRINGS — Manistee-St. Francis swept the top three spots in slalom and giant slalom Wednesday to win the boys' Lake Michigan Conference championship ski meet at Boyne Highlands.

Manistee-St. Francis finished with 29 points. Harbor Springs was second with 63.

Steven Siddall and Cole McCardel led the way. Siddall won the slalom (1:07.99) with McCardel second (1:09.96). They reversed positions in the GS. McCardel placed first (1:03.43) and Siddall second (1:03.59). Teammate Tyler Hansen was third in the slalom (1:10.08) and GS (1:04.05).

The team's fourth counter was Jeff Summers, who took eighth in the slalom (1:16.39) and ninth in the GS (1:05.91).

Boyne City's Norm Berge was fourth in both races.

Harbor Springs won the girls race, edging Manistee-St. Francis 38-43.

The Rams had a seven-point separation in GS to claim the title.

For Manistee-St. Francis, Nathalie Kenny swept the two disciplines, winning the GS in 57.56 and the slalom in 1:08.65. Teammate Andrea Paine was third in both races (59.55 in GS, 1:12.79) in slalom. Krissi Dressler came in fifth in the slalom (1:15.70) and 10th in the GS (1:03.69) while Lauren Hansen took eighth in slalom (1:18.45) and Syriah Dobis 12th in GS (1:04.30).

Abigail Hackman of Harbor Springs was second in the GS (59.0) and in slalom (1:11.98).

TC Central     7 Gaylord     0

Cooper Macdonell and Marcus Russell each scored two first period goals to spark Traverse City Central to a 7-0 Big North Conference win over Gaylord.

The Trojans finished league play a perfect 10-0, the first time Central's accomplished that since the league was formed.

Macdonell scored an unassisted goal to get things going Wednesday. Russell made it 2-0 off an assist from Alec Round. Macdonell converted a short-handed goal with Lucas Little assisting. Then Russell closed out the first period with his second tally, Little and Cam Givens assisting on the power-play goal.

Russell picked up his hat-trick with a power-play goal in the second period. Givens assisted.

In the third period, Brady Girard netted his first varsity goal. Mark Jordan drew the assist. Little finished it off on an assist from Mitchell Ward.

Bill Vermetten had 16 saves in goal for the Trojans (16-3-1), who face Farmington on Friday in the MIHL Showcase in Trenton.

Bay Reps      3 Cadillac      2

Zach Hill and P.J. Heger scored short-handed goals to help the Bay Reps defeat Cadillac 3-2.

Heger put the Reps up 1-0 in the second period off a Hill assist, and Hill's short-hander off a Gavin Uitvlugt set up made it 2-1 after Tyler Thomas scored for the Vikings.

With 22 ticks left in the second period, Heger's power-play goal put the Reps up 3-1. Hill notched his third point of the day on the goal, and Zack Bargy also drew a helper.

Joey Gussert scored with a minute remaining in the game as Cadillac pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, but the Reps were able to hold on.

The Reps' John Posler made 13 saves, while Cadillac's P.J. Nemesh had 17 stops.

The Reps (9-10) play Flint Powers on Friday in the MIHL Showcase, then take on Grandville on Saturday.

Glen Lake      58 Suttons Bay      43

Glen Lake handed Suttons Bay just its second Northwest Conference setback, winning 58-43.

Mike O'Brien led the Lakers with 27 points, and Carter Lee added 10.

Greg Banks had 20 for the Norsemen (10-3, 7-2 NWC), who travel Friday to Kingsley.

Buckley     69 Frankfort     59

It was a 51-point swing.

The first time Frankfort and Buckley met, the Panthers won by 41 points.

On Wednesday, the Bears pulled out a 69-59 overtime win in Northwest Conference action.

The game was tied at 50-50 after regulation.

Jake Larson and Evan Chalker hit key 3-pointers in overtime and Buckley converted on 8 of 10 free throws. Chalker finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Larson 20 points and 10 assists for the Bears (6-7, 2-6), who travel to Glen Lake on Friday.

Brandon Miller and Dave Loney scored 15 points apiece for Frankfort.

Kingsley     65 Mesick     49

Austin Olson led a balanced attack with 14 points as Kingsley defeated Mesick 65-49 in Northwest Conference play.

Rachi Sims and Austin Nagy added 12 points and Dillon Bach 10 for the Stags (6-7), who host Suttons Bay on Friday. Nagy also had 10 rebounds. Kingsley led 34-21 at half.

Shawn Bates tossed in a game-high 21 points for Mesick.

Benzie Central     54 Leland     36

Connor Stapleton was red hot from the field, scoring 22 points, as Benzie Central posted a 54-36 Northwest Conference win over Leland.

Williams Huddleston added 12 points for the Huskies.

Paul Bardenhagen's 12 points topped Leland (6-6, 4-5), which plays Mesick on Friday.

Bellaire     59 Johannesburg     13

Johannesburg-Lewiston tried to slow the tempo with a spread delay, but Bellaire was still able to pull away to a 59-13 Ski Valley win.

It was 28-2 at half.

Kasey Poel's 14 points, six steals and three rebounds paced the Eagles (14-0, 11-0), who travel to Forest Area on Wednesday. Reece Koepke added 13 points and Gus Meriwether 11.

Sean Aisthorpe led the Cardinals with six points.

Mancelona     59 Onaway     45

Brandon Dingman's double-double — 23 points and 10 rebounds — powered Mancelona to a 59-45 Ski Valley Conference win over Onaway.

Wyatt Derrer added 11 points. Kyle Schepperley pulled down a team-high 16 rebounds. Logan Borst dished out five assists.

Joe O'Bradovich netted 11 points for Onaway.

Mancelona (6-7, 4-5) travels to Central Lake on Friday.

Ellsworth     54 Mackinaw City     45

Matt Barraw and Jake Seaney led Ellsworth to a 54-45 Northern Lakes Conference win over Mackinaw City.

Barraw finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Seaney had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Lancers (5-8, 5-2), who take on Central Lake next Wednesday.

Noah Morse netted 18 points for Mackinaw City.

Manistee Catholic      48 Lake Leelanau SM      35

Manistee Catholic's balanced attack led the Sabers to a 48-35 non-conference victory over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.

Zach Bialik scored 14 to lead Manistee CC, while Alex Bialik had eight and Ben Feliczak added eight points and six rebounds. Andrew Perry and Nathan Papes each had six points and five boards and Alex Hogan nine assists.

The Sabers (12-3, 10-1 Western Michigan D League) hit the road Friday at Bear Lake.

Nick Shaffran led St. Mary's with 11 points, while Connor Pobuda had seven and Caleb Korson and Richard Herman each scored six.
