TRAVERSE CITY — Cam Givens scored with 5:14 left in overtime to Traverse City Central a 2-1 victory over rival Traverse City West.
Givens intercepted a cross-ice pass, split two defenders and went high glove side to the game-winning goal.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Comerica Park in Detroit as part of the run-up to the Winter Classic, but was moved back to Traverse City's Howe Arena when the lockout was not resolved in time to save the Classic.
"They came out hard in the first period," Central coach Chris Givens said. "They had some really good chances. In the second, we turned it up a bit. But Carter (Edmondson) was seeing the puck really well."
Edmondson ended up with 39 saves in regulation as Central held a 40-15 advantage in shots.
"It was good to get that goal because through the first three minutes of overtime, it didn't look like we were going to get anything past them," Chris Givens said. "They really clamped down on defense."
Just 33 seconds after an apparent Collin Peters goal was waived off because the net came off the moorings, West's Nick Schultz scored off a Jake Saxton assist to put West up 1-0 with 11:25 remaining in the first period.
Central came back in the second on Jordan deTar's goal set up by Derek Schrank with 2:32 left.
"The boys played well and played hard," West coach Jeremy Rintala said. "They limited mistakes. They've really improved over the last month and a half."
Both teams huddled together at center ice prior to the start of the game for a moment of silence for the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shootings.
Central plays at Alpena on Friday, while West hosts Gaylord.
