Police: Man breaks up fight with gun

TRAVERSE CITY — Police said a man on Traverse City's east side tried to stop a fight outside his home with a handgun.

Traverse City police responded about 1 a.m. Monday to a reported domestic argument at Webster and Michigan streets. A 19-year-old woman and 23-year-old man, both of Traverse City, got into an argument on the street. The fight escalated and the woman allegedly hit the man several times before he grabbed her and pinned her to the ground.

Police said a nearby homeowner, 34, saw the fight and thought someone was in danger. He grabbed a Springfield 9mm handgun from his home and approached the fighting couple. Police said he pointed the weapon at the two and told them to break it up. He returned to his home with the gun once the fight stopped, where police later found him.

The woman was arrested for domestic assault and taken to the Grand Traverse County jail. Police said the Grand Traverse County prosecutor will review the actions of the man who pointed the gun to determine if any charges should be filed.
