Hines sets state track record

Several other area athletes claim state titles

Central Lake's Jasmine Hines set a Division 4 state record Saturday in winning the shot put.

Hines had a toss of 42'7" that beat the old mark of 41'9" by Sarah Adelaine of Harbor Springs in 2000.

Northern Michigan produced several other state champs Saturday.

In Division 2, Cadillac's Tyler Ellsworth, Tyler Hewett, Jake Hurrell and Cody Zagers won the 400 relay, edging Highland Park by the narrowest of margins, 42.66 to 42.67.

In Division 3, Benzie Central junior Michaela Carnegie won the 800 in 2:16.16 and anchored the school's winning 3200 relay. Theresa Warsecke, Miranda Besey, Taylor Nye and Carnege ran a 9:32.19. It's the second year in a row Benzie has won that race at the state meet.

Besey was the only newcomer to the team.

Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma captured the boys 800 in 1:55.64.

In addition to Hines in Division 4, Manton's Ben Denomme claimed the discus in 155'.5".
