Roundup: Central track team sweeps Titans

Evan Cover ran the seventh fastest 800 meter time by a sophomore in Traverse City Central history Tuesday as the Trojans beat West 127.66- 36.33 in a Big North Conference boys track meet.

Cover was clocked at 2:02.5.

Both teams held out their regional participants from the meet. The regional is Friday night.

Central finished unbeaten in league dual meets for the third consecutive season.

Cover also ran on the victorious 1600 (3:44.7) and 3200 (8:46.78) relays. He was joined by Ryan Keenan, Tyler Kelly and Mohamadou Diatta in the 1600 and Vatsana Phengkhamkip, Kelly and Keenan in the 3200.

Max Walker claimed the shot put (43'11") and discus (114'1"). Max Johnson took the 1600 (4:59) and 3200 (11:08.9) for the Trojans.

Sheldon Berry captured the 110 high hurdles (16.98) and Drew Carmien the 300 intermediates (44.38). Boone Marois won the 100 (11.72) and Reilly Brady the 400 (55.6). Central's Adam Bush and Ian McGraw tied in the pole vault (10'). Tim Myette took the high jump (5'8"). Marois, Berry, Ryan Verschuren and Sem Novikov claimed the 400 relay (46.85) and Verschuren, Brady, Carmien and Marois the 800 relay (1:37.7).

For West, Evan Spaulding won the long jump (19') and Scott Ringwelski the 200 (23.9).

Bower leads Trojans past Titans in dual

Kortney Bower won the shot put (37'7") and discus (112'8") to spark Traverse City Central to a 97-66 Big North Conference victory over Traverse City West.

The Trojans had two other wins in the field events -- Molly Walker in the high jump (5'1") and Emily Groff in the long jump (14'10.5").

Mallory Weaver took the 100 hurdles (16.64), Molly Tompkins the 1600 (5:48), Maggie McWilliams the 400, Julia Otwell the 800 (2:23.63) and Alison Ostema the 3200 (12:56.1).

Central's Ostema, Sam Kaufman, Jessica Krantz and Sam Ehle won the 3200 relay (11:00).

For the Titans, Lilia Favela captured the 100, Mandy Scott the 200, Ruth Hines the 300 hurdles and Ashley Leitner the pole vault.

West also won three relays -- Logan Niedermaier, Margeaux Lancatser, Sarah Reece and Breanna Greenland in the 800; Niedermaier, Lancaster, Celia Jabour and Megan Klco in the 400; and Reece, Greenland, Megan Ankerson and Jen Stevenson in the 1600.

TC West claims Gaylord Invitational

Traverse City West won the Gaylord Invitational for its third tournament victory of the year, posting its best team score in the process.

The Titans shot a 307 on the Classic course at Otsego Club. Petoskey was second (314), followed by TC Central (317) and Gaylord (318).

Joey Garber led Petoskey with an event-low 70, while Gaylord's Zach Rygwelski was second with a 74.

Ian Davis shot a 75 for the Titans to finish third overall. John Cannon and P.J. Dienes fired 76s and Josh Broad 80.

TC Central was third with 317. Marshall Anderson shot 76, Matt Gauthier and Trevor Mattis each had 80 while Andy Bump shot 81.

In the JV meet, TC West won with 322, taking the top four individual places. Corey Thiel shot 79, Chris Dienes 80, Kevin Gaston 81 and Andrew Northway 82.

West's JV Gold team took third at 364. Erik Charters shot 88, Andrew Jolink 89, Kaleb Rodes 92 and Jordan Rivett 95.
