Track Roundup: Trojan boys break record

TC West girls also set new mark at regional

MIDLAND -- A 27-year record at Traverse City Central has fallen.

The Trojan boys set a new mark in the 400-meter relay Friday while qualifying for the state finals in the Division 1 regional.

TC Central finished fourth in the regional with 56 points. Flint Carman-Ainsworth won with 161 points, followed by Flushing (71) and Midland (68).

The team of Tyler Clark, Ben Broad, Mike Heim and Blair Bell finished second in the 400 relay in 43.14 seconds. The former TC Central record was set in 1982 at 43.7.

The Trojans also qualified in the 3200 relay with Jacob Borysiak, Drew Dancer, Nick Bruning and Dillon Lizenby with a second-place finish in 8:02.1.

Bell also finished third in the 110 hurdles in 14.6 seconds to move on to the state meet May 30 at East Kentwood.

Evan Dancer also qualified by placing fourth in the 3200 in 9:39.8.

While not moving on to the state finals, Central had a fourth-place finish from James Barbera (48-5) in the shot put. Ryan Gammell and Shawn Serrell tied for fourth in the pole vault at 11 feet, 10 inches while Reece Karbowski was fourth (4:33.3) in the 1600 and Alex Lance (4:34.7) was fifth.

TC Central girls qualify for finals in six events

Kortney Bower, Maren Bahra, Taylor Mattarella and Julia Otwell each qualified for the state finals in two events as Traverse City Central finished second in its Division 1 regional at Midland.

Flint Southwestern won the 14-team regional with 112 points, followed by Central (90) and Midland (75). TC West was eighth with 43 points.

Bower won the discus with a meet-best heave of 116'5", and was second in the shot put with a throw of 37'8".

Bahra, Mattarella, Otwell and Katie Fallick combined to win the 3,200 relay in 9:37.24.

Mattarella also won the 3,200 run in 11:19.9

Otwell was second in the 1,600 in 5:07.32, finish a hundredth of a second out of first place.

Bahra was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, but met the height to qualify for the finals.

Traverse City West had two state qualifiers.

Jamie Gotschall broke her own school record in the pole vault by clearing 10-8 for second place. The former record was 10-6.

Ashley Leitner also qualified for the state finals in the pole vault by clearing 10-2.

While not qualifying, the Titans also had a third-place finish in the 3200 relay from Marcy Marek, Erin Holstad, Kaylee VanDommelen and Veronica Asch (9:56), a fifth from Kara Polhman in the 100 hurdles (16.74), sixth from Lilia Savela in the long jump (15-7.5) and a sixth from Hannah Rickard in the 3200 (11:58.5).
