Trojan boys win Big North track title

TC's Bell sweeps hurdles, sets meet record

ALPENA -- Blair Bell led Traverse City Central to its sixth Big North boys track title in the league's 12-year history Wednesday.

The Trojans finished with 164 points, Traverse City West 83, Alpena 77, Petoskey 76, Cadillac 75 and Gaylord 48.

"That's the most points in the conference in the last four years," Central coach John Lober said.

Bell set a meet record in claiming the 110 high hurdles (14.71). He also took the 300 hurdles (41.3). Bell teamed with Tyler Clark, Ben Broad and Mike Heim to set a meet record in the 400 relay (43.85). That same foursome won the 800 relay (1:33.6) as well.

Central dominated in the distances, finishing 1-2-3 in the 1600 -- Alex Lance (4:42.3), Reece Karbowski (4:44.7) and Nick Bruning (4:45.4) -- and 1-2 in the 3200 -- Evan Dancer (10:07.5) and Lance (10:40).

Jacob Borysiak, Drew Dancer, Tyler Kelly and Evan Cover placed second in the 3200 relay (8:34.4). Clark added a third in the 200 (23.7) and Derrick Rudolph a third in the 400 (53.9).

Although the Trojans did not win any of the field events, they placed throughout. Sean Sorrell finished second (12'8") and Ryan Gemmell third (11'6") in the pole vault. James Barbera was second in the shot put (48'11.5") while Nick Alpers took third in the discus (133'11").

Eric Wilson was a standout for West, winning the 400 (53.06) and 800 (2:09). He was also on the victorious 3200 relay (8:25) with Keith Bristol, Ray Innis and Ben Bean. Wilson, Greg Forrester, Zeke Famiano and Gunnar Brammer placed second in the 1600 relay (3:35).

Forrester finished second in the 300 hurdles (42.42) while Famiano took second in the 400 (53.28).

Cam Howard, Famiano, Cody Russell and Brammer came in second in the 800 relay (1:35) for coach Jerry Ruskowski's team.

Alpena claims girls race

Traverse City Central beat Alpena in last Saturday's Division 1 girls track regional.

Not so Wednesday in the Big North Conference championship meet at Alpena.

The Wildcats beat Central 141-110.5. Petoskey took third (77), Traverse City West and Gaylord tied for fourth (69) and Cadillac placed sixth (56.5).

Kortney Bower paced the Trojans, winning the discus (115'6") and shot put (36'8"). Julia Otwell captured the 1600 (5:16.17). Otwell teamed with Maren Bahra, Katie Fallick and Taylor Mattarella to win the 3200 relay (10:04).

Bahra added a second in the 400 (1:01.74) and a third in the long jump (16'1.25"). Central's 1600 relay team of Bahra, Aimee Marsh, Fallick and Otwell placed second (4:44.9).

Molly Walker picked up a third in the high jump (4'11") while Katie Perkins was third in the 3200 (12:33).

TC West won the 800 relay in 1:51.83 with Mandy Scott, Dani Brzezinski, Lilia Favela and Kara Pohlman.

Favela was second in the long jump (16-1.5) and third in the 100 (13.24), Scott was third in the 400 (1:04.01), Pohlman was third in the 300 hurdles (51.51) and Veronica Asch was third in the 800 (2:32.53).

West also finished third in the 400 relay (54.38) with Ruth Hines, Brzezinski, Hannah Schnack and Ashley Leitner.
