COMSTOCK PARK -- With eight medalists, Benzie Central's girls track team ran to a second place finish Saturday at the Division 3 state finals.
The Huskies finished with 48 points, trailing state champ Frankenmuth's mark of 68. Albion was third with 39 points.
Benzie won the 3,200-meter relay in 9 minutes, 30.27 seconds with the team of Devyn Ramsay, Taylor Nye, Theresa Warsecke and Michaela Carnegie. It bettered the school record the group previously set by 6 seconds.
"The distance runners really carried the weight all day," Huskies coach Asa Kelly said. "We knew it was going to be close between us and Albion for second, but we held them off in the 1600 relay."
In the 1600 run, Carnegie finished second (5:08.18) while Ramsay was third (5:10.25). Benzie also had two medalists in the 800 as Carnegie placed fourth (2:18.81) and Warsecke was seventh (2:23.03).
Ramsay was second in the 3200 (11:07.99), Corrie Noah was sixth in the 300 hurdles (47.32) and the Huskies 1600 relay finished third (4:09.16).
Elk Rapids had a fourth-place finish from Kelly VanDeusen in the long jump at 16 feet, 4 inches, Charlevoix's Alyssa Smith was fifth at 16-1.5, while Manistee's McKenzie Majchrzak was seventh in 16-1.25. Majchrzak was second in the high jump at 5-4.
Kingsley's Ashley Graves finished sixth in the discus at 126-6.
In the boys' meet, Albion won with 61.5 points while Allendale was second with 43. Benzie had the best area finish with 12 points.
Nick Radionoff paced the Huskies by winning the 800 in 1:55.86. Benzie was also seventh in the 3200 relay (8:11.71).
Kingsley had 11 points as David Zaleski was fifth in the 100 (11.23) and seventh in the 200 (23.42). The Stags also finished fourth in the 1600 relay (3:27.8)
Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma was second in the 1600 in 4:22.44, Charlevoix's Eric Buday finished fourth in the 800 in 1:57.3, Manistee's Ryan Helminiak was fourth in the high jump at 6-5 and Kalkaska's Ethan Miltenberger was eighth in the discus (144-8).
