TRAVERSE CITY - It’s official: today's warm weather broke a high temperature record that stood for nearly a century. The high temperature for Traverse City as of Tuesday afternoon was 51 degrees. That measurement breaks a previous record high of 50 degrees for Jan. 29, set in 1914.
"Warm temperatures," said Scott Rozanski, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Gaylord. "It’s due to a system coming up through the Plains. Instead of going south through Detroit, it went to the west of us, and we got the warm side of it."
Temperatures should remain mild through noon Wednesday, then drop. Wednesday’s forecast calls for a high of 35 degrees and a nighttime low of 15 degrees with rain and snow in the mix.
