Mildred Pauls Martin

TRAVERSE CITY — Mildred Pauls Martin, 102, of Traverse City, formerly of Georgetown, Ky., and Albion, Mich., died Nov. 16, 2012, following a brief illness.

Mildred was born on Nov. 6, 1910, to Benjamin and Mary Arts Pauls in Williamston, Mich. After graduating from Williamston Public Schools in 1929, she obtained her Registered Nurse degree from the James Sheldon Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Albion, where she met her future husband Harvey J. Martin.

Mildred and Harvey were married on Oct. 15, 1932, in Albion, where they resided until 1989 when they retired and moved to Georgetown, Ky. Mildred and Harvey celebrated 66 years together until his death in 1999. In 2006, Mildred moved to Traverse City to be near her two grandsons and their families, residing at Glen Eagle Retirement Community.

Mildred was active in community and church services in both Albion and Georgetown. In 2006, Mildred was recognized for her dedicated service by the Georgetown, Ky., United Methodist Church through the Golden Star Citation, which is selectively awarded to servants who have over the years demonstrated dedicated community service, confessions of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the praising of God, and for personal generosity in sharing to those in need. While living in Albion, Mildred was an active member of the Jackson Road Club, South Albion Women's Club and South Albion Farmers' Club.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; son-in-law, Jerry Garner; and daughters-in-law, Jerre Martin, Suzanne Martin, and Teresa Martin.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Clara Jane Garner of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; sons, Jon Harvey Martin of Cleveland, N.C., and David Robert (Maureen) Martin of Estero Fla.; grandchildren, Keith (Cheri) Huggett and Mark (Olivia) Garner of Traverse City, Elizabeth (Dwayne) Howard of Chillicothe, Ohio, Deborah (Ty) Crowson of Naples, Fla., and Catherine (Don) Depriest of Lexington, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Audrey and Kyle Huggett, Claire and Mary Garner, Stephanie Stewart, Brandon Mowery, Andrea Crowson, and Clayton Depriest; and two great-great-grandsons.

Mildred requested that we keep these thoughts in mind: "I have left the past in God's keeping, the future in God's mercy." "Bury me not with grieving words and tears, but lay me to peaceful rest 'neath the bird song trees and bright blue and starry night skies and let the river mist softly drift over the shadows of our yesterdays. Take your leave with happy memories and know you are loved." "In tribute to my German ancestry - auf wiedersehen - good bye until we meet again." "Love never ends" - First Corinthians 13:8.

In keeping with Mildred's wishes there will be graveside services, a memorial celebration, and interment in the Martin Family plot, Riverside Cemetery, Albion, Mich., planned for the late spring of 2013.

Mildred's family would like to thank and extend their appreciation to the staff and residents of Glen Eagle Retirement Community who welcomed her and made her life there so enjoyable, and also to the staff of Munson Hospice House who comforted her in her last days on this earth.
