FLA — BRADENTON,Leslie George McCain, Jr., 89, of Palmetto, Fla. died Nov. 23, 2012 after a brief illness.
Born May 2, 1923 in Hastings, Mich., the son of Leslie George McCain and Faye White McCain, Les graduated from Traverse City Senior High and served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He received a purple heart and other commendations for his dedication and bravery. Following his discharge he earned a professional degree from Michigan State College specializing in education administration. He served in various educational administrative capacities both in the Traverse City area and countries outside the United States until his retirement.
As a husband, father, friend and leader, Les modeled honesty, integrity, humility, compassion and perseverance. He touched countless lives through his friendship, council and willingness to help others.
Les is reunited with Jewell, his wife of 65 years. They were life long members of the First Christian Church in Traverse City. One of their favorite hobbies was traveling together. Notwithstanding many interesting stories from those travels, they most enjoyed the friends made throughout the world.
Les leaves his son, Leslie George McCain III and daughter, Sandra Gilbertson, both of Palmetto, Fla. Additionally he is survived by his sister-in- law, Jane Hanskenecht; two grandchildren, Philip Gilbertson of Fruitport and Kelly Gilbertson of Traverse City and five great grandchildren. Les was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jewell, his granddaughter, Karan, and two brothers, Myron and Fred.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday Nov. 30 in Palmetto at Country Lakes Village I Clubhouse. A second Memorial Service will be held in Traverse City in the spring. Please direct memorials to a local hospice or another charity of your choice.
