R-E names executive editor, ad director

Publisher announces promotions for Tyree, Zucco to key positions

TRAVERSE CITY — The Record-Eagle announced two promotions within the newspaper's management.

Mike Tyree has been named executive editor. Mark Zucco is the new advertising director.

Record-Eagle Publisher Al Frattura said both Tyree and Zucco offer impressive experience and knowledge.

The newspaper received more than 50 resumés for the editor position after longtime Editor Bill Thomas announced plans to retire, Frattura said. Tyree's news background, local ties and understanding of the region gave him an advantage.

"Mike rose to the top, and he's earned the opportunity," Frattura said.

Tyree takes over the editor post after the retirement of Thomas, who left the Record-Eagle in January. Tyree joined the Record-Eagle in 2003 as the local news editor.

Before that, he was The Associated Press' northern Michigan correspondent, based in Traverse City, and worked as a reporter at the Kalamazoo Gazette and Northville Record. He landed his first newspaper job in 1989 at the Bonita Banner/Naples Daily News in Bonita Springs, Fla. Tyree has won many national and state journalism awards, and helped lead the Record-Eagle newsroom to six Michigan Press Association Newspaper of the Year titles.

"This is a great honor, and the most humbling moment of my journalism career. More than anything, I owe this promotion to the talented and committed journalists with whom I've served the past nine years, particularly my friend and mentor, Bill Thomas," said Tyree. "We'll continue to do our best to provide the Grand Traverse region an outstanding newspaper and website."

Zucco's credits include more than 25 years of marketing experience.

"He brings another level to the advertising team," Frattura said.

Zucco worked as the senior brand marketing manager for BAE Systems Products Group. He also served as account director for strategic planning at Idea Stream Marketing in Traverse City, vice president of sales and marketing for Shanty Creek Resort & Club and had a long career at Young & Rubicam in Detroit.

Zucco said he's excited by the newspaper's investment in both print and online products.

"It's a great paper," Zucco said, who started at the Record-Eagle in 2010.
