Army Corps will raise state funding

MARIE — SAULT STE.U.S. Sen. Carl Levin said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved a $6.9 million increase in funding for dredging, maintenance and other water projects in Michigan.

The Michigan Democrat said Tuesday that the corps increased allocations for six Michigan projects after he pressed officials last month. He said the work is needed to keep waterways open and preserve jobs.

Levin said the corps is increasing funding for work on the St. Marys River near Sault Ste. Marie by $2.8 million. Some other increases are $2.1 million for the Saginaw River, $700,000 for St. Joseph Harbor and $591,000 for Holland Harbor.

, $500,000 for Manistee Harbor and $225,000 for Genesee County wastewater treatment.

Levin says Army Undersecretary Joseph Westphal notified him of the increases.
