East Jordan's Brennan goes pro

EAST JORDAN — Traverse City's Larry Warbasse has a little more local competition.

The Traverse City native and BMC team racer will be joined on the professional biking circuit by 2008 East Jordan grad Mac Brennan, who was signed by Bissell Pro Cycling.

Brennan, 22, is a senior physics major at Michigan Tech.

3-on-3 basketball tourney Aug. 18

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Bulldogs Athletic Association is partnering with Flight Classic to bring a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to Traverse City on Aug. 18.

The tourney — located in the K-Mart parking lot at the Cherryland Center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. — is a fundraiser for team uniforms, gym rental and other expenses for TCBAA homeschool teams.

The double elimination tournament guarantees each team at least three games, and a T-shirt. The event will feature a three-point and free-throw shooting contest.

The cost is $96 for each four-player team, with divisions by gender, age and experience.

Port Oneida Run slated for Aug. 4

GLEN ARBOR — The third annual Port Oneida Run will take place on Aug. 4.

The race is a 5K barn to barn trail run/walk in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Kids 12 and under can participate in the quarter-mile Kids Schoolhouse Dash for a $5 donation race day at 8:30 a.m.

Packet pick-up is 7:30-8:45 a.m. at the farm's red barn. Pre-registration online or mail in by 5 p.m. Aug. 2 is $25, and $30 thereafter.

McKeel, Hughes win 5K race

GLEN ARBOR — Benzonia's Scott McKeel and Wisconsin's Annie Hughes were the overall winners in Tuesday's sixth annual Running Bear Run 5K.

McKeel was timed in 16:37, Hughes in 19:14. Cincinnati's Paul Salach placed second to McKeel in 17:06. North Carolina's Betsy Armentrout finished second to Hughes in 19:46.

More than 620 runners, including 120 children, competed.

Globetrotters to play in Petoskey

PETOSKEY — The Harlem Globetrotters will make four area appearances between Aug. 2 and 4, including one that features legendary ex-Globetrotters Curly Neal and Sweet Lou Dunbar.

Neal and Dunbar will speak at the Globetrotter Legends One-on-One Series on Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. at John M. Hall Auditorium in Bay View. Tickets are $20. A summer skills clinic is being held Aug. 2 at Swift Field in Bay View at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $15 for the clinic.

The Globetrotters will also play two games in Petoskey on Aug. 2 and 4 at 7 p.m. both days at Petoskey High School. Tickets are $25 each.
