Basketball Roundup: Sabers clinch crown

ONEKAMA — Manistee Catholic entered the final game of the regular season tied with Bear Lake in the Western Michigan D League standings.

The Sabers took care of their business with a 78-63 win at Onekama, but then got some help when Baldwin upset Bear Lake with a 69-58 win.

That gave Manistee Catholic its first WMDL championship.

"We had to take care of our own business for a tie," Sabers coach Dale Edmondson Jr. said. "I told our kids not to worry about this until after the season. We have to focus on Frankfort in the district. We can smile about this later."

Manistee Catholic (17-3, 15-1 WMDL) had 34 points from Zach Bialak in the win while Alex Hogan had 10 points, five rebounds and nine assists. Ben Selicdek had 10 points.

For Onekama, Derek Hobart had 19 points, Quinn Matthews scored 15 and Alex Welch added 11 points.

Midland      72 TC West      49

Midland snapped TC West's four-game winning streak with a 72-49 non-conference win.

The Chemics (8-11) had 20 points from Ty DeJong.

The Titans (13-7) had 13 points from Jeremiah Williams while Trevor Commissaris had 12 points and five rebounds. TC West is off until the district semifinals next Wednesday against either Alpena or TC Central.

TC Central     63 Ludington     48

Traverse City Central rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit for a much-needed 63-48 non-conference win over Ludington.

The Trojans (6-13) trailed 30-21 at the break, but limited the Orioles to 18 second-half points.

In the first half, Ludington hit four 3-pointers and converted 13 of 14 free throws.

Ryan Verschuren led the Trojans with 16 points. Ethan Pilarski added 12.

Central won the JV game 54-47 as Nate Schlusler netted 22.

The Trojans are at Cadillac on Thursday.

Elk Rapids      59 Frankfort      34

Elk Rapids got out to an early lead and never looked back for a 59-34 non-conference win over Frankfort.

The Elks (13-6) led 15-6 after the first quarter and 32-13 at the half. Austin McMullen had 20 points for Elk Rapids, Luke Morrison scored 18 while Spencer Impellizzeri added 11 points.

Brandon Miller led Frankfort with nine points.

Elk Rapids is at Lake Leelanau St. Mary's on Thursday.

Grayling     75 Houghton Lake     51

Zane Tobin tossed in 26 points as Grayling beat Houghton Lake 75-51 in a non-league game.

Steven Enos added 14 points for the Vikings (16-4), who led 39-24 at half.

Forest Area      60 Mesick      56

Forest Area came back for a 60-56 non-conference win over Mesick.

The Warriors (9-10) trailed at half. Ryan Magee had 16 points and four assists, Jermaine Nix had 11 points, Justin Burke had 15 points and 13 rebounds while Austin Vance added 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Thane Herbert led Mesick with 13 points.

Bellaire      79 Northport      34

Bellaire finished the regular season with a 19-1 record after a 79-34 win over Northport.

The Eagles had 15 points from Mitch Teetzel, 13 points and four rebounds from Gus Meriwether and 10 points from Denny Hall.

Bill Stowe led the Wildcats with 22 points.

Gaylord St. Mary      50 Mesick      46

Gaylord St. Mary held on for a 50-46 Ski Valley Conference win over Mancelona.

The Snowbirds had 11 points from Patrick Switalski while Luke Wisniewski and Matt Spyhalski each scored 10 points.

The Ironmen had 12 points each from Wyatt Derrer and Brandon Dingman while Logan Borst had five assists. Mesick wraps up the regular season with Johannesburg-Lewiston on Thursday.

TC Christian      60 Leland      50

TC Christian made free throws down the stretch for a 60-50 non-conference win over Leland.

The Sabres (14-5) had 15 points from Ian Newberry, 14 points from Paul Bump, 10 points from Jesse Heerdt and 12 rebounds, seven blocks from Kris Crosby.

J.R. Duvall had 14 points for the Comets (11-8).

The teams will meet again next week when they face off in the district semifinals at Leland.

St. Francis      60 Glen Lake      51

Sean Sheldon got hot early as St. Francis posted a 60-51 non-conference win at Glen Lake.

Sheldon had 17 of his 24 points in the first half for the Gladiators (17-2). Michael Jenkins scored nine while Byron Bullough added eight.

Mike O'Brien had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers (12-7). With 3 minutes to go, he scored his 16th point of the night, which gave him 1,000 for his career.

Also for Glen Lake, Dylan Wendels had 12 points and Carter Lee added 10.

St. Francis hosts Gaylord on Thursday while Glen Lake is at Frankfort. The Glads and Lakers meet again Monday in the district opener.

Suttons Bay      67 Harbor Springs      57

Suttons Bay picked up a 67-57 non-conference win over Harbor Springs.

The Norse (13-6) had 19 points each from Mason Darling and Aaron Orban. They'll play Leland on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.

Harbor Springs had 19 points from Neal Zoerhof while Spencer Kloss scored 18 points.

Harbor Light      41 Ellsworth      37

Ellsworth's Jake Seaney racked up a triple double, but Harbor Light came away with a 41-37 victory.

Seaney had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 16 steals for the Lancers (5-13) while Dalton Swenson added 12 points.

Daniel Klevorn led Harbor Light with 16 points.

Ellsworth hosts Wolverine in the regular season finale on Thursday.

McBain NMC     46, Lake City      39

Northern Michigan Christian held off a late rally to score a 46-39 decision over visiting Lake City in Highland Conference play.

Senior center Tyler Gernaat generated a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for NMC (15-4, 8-3). Trevor Gernaat and Kyle Benthem each hit for nine points and Trevor also had five assists and five steals.

Tyler Gernaat and Benthem each hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 90 seconds after Lake City's Adam Williams drained a put-back to bring the Trojans within 39-37.

Nolan Davenport and Williams had 11 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Lake City (12-7, 6-7).
