HONOR — E. Jean Swartz, 85, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, and a longtime resident of Benzie County, passed away of natural causes in her home on Feb. 6, 2012.
Jean was born Oct. 7, 1926, in Onaway, to Lewis and Elsie (Slaught) LaForest. After the death of her father, her mother married Thomas I. McCarry, of Newberry. Jean married Donald Swartz on Nov. 26, 1967, in Columbus, Ohio.
Jean lived in Newberry, then in Columbus, Ohio, until she moved to Benzie County in 1971, where she and Don were in the motel and resort business, owning and operating Platte Lake Resort I and Platte Lake Resort II.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Swartz; brothers, Terry LaForest and Peter McCarry; sister, Jennifer Cudney; and great-grandson, Connor Miller.
She is survived by her loving daughter and best friend, Sandy (John) Lawrence; and grandchildren, Frank (Shelley) Miller, Joseph Miller, Matt (Karen) Miller, John M. "Boo" (Becky) Lawrence and Brenda (Mark) Lawrence-Cleghorn. She is also survived by her loving daughter, Carol (Joe) Fraley-Johannasen; and grandchildren, Chris (Katy) Hivick, Nathan (Monica) Hivick, Owen (Julie) Turner and Anne (Travis) Sheffler. She also had 24 beloved great-grandchildren, whom she loved very much. Also surviving Jean are her sister, Patsy (Jerry) Foley; brother-in-law, Nelson Cudney; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. No services are scheduled at this time.
The family has entrusted arrangements to Oak Grove Cremation Center in Manistee.
