Prep Roundup: Five matches, five pins

TC Central's Roberge stars, but Benzie wins

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Central senior Zack Roberge pinned all five of his opponents in the first period Saturday in the John Sonnemann Wrestling Invitational at Central.

The Trojans finished fourth with 146.5 points. Benzie Central won the tournament with 252,5 points. Ogemaw Heights was second with 243.5.

Roberge, who now has 97 career wins, was one of four Central wrestlers to finish 5-0 on the day. The others -- Justin Ray at 112, Jacob Ansorge at 119 and Julian Diaz at 125.

Vatsana Phengkhamkip went 4-1 at 135 while James Dimas won two matches at 215.

West's Dalzell finishes third at Rockford

Traverse City West's Brandon Dalzell placed third at 215 in the Rockford Invitational.

Dalzell finished 3-1.

Mike Ostrom came in fourth at 103 with a 2-2 record.

Also winning two matches for the Titans were Rob Innis at 130 and Zack Skeels at 189.

Kingsley captures its own invitational

Kingsley went 5-0 to capture its invitational on Saturday.

Manistee took second at 4-1.

The Stags had nine wrestlers finish 5-0 -- York Ash at 103, Pat Denny at 119, Steve Fultz at 130, Austin Sanchez at 135, Joe Leach at 140, Gabe Collins at 145, Luke Szymshack at 160, Lewis Generaux at 171 and Tyler Croton at 285.

BASKETBALL

TC West 44
Gaylord 22

Loren Wagner had 13 points and nine rebounds as Traverse City West defeated Gaylord 44-22 in a Big North Conference girls basketball game.

It was the third game of the week for the Titans (8-3, 3-1), who led 15-9 at half.

Emily Ellison chipped in nine points and eight rebounds for West, which is off until next Friday when the Titans travel across town to play Central.

Jenna Zaborowski led Gaylord with nine points.

Gaylord won the JV game. West took the freshman game 40-35 as Jill Turnquist netted 17 points and Karissa Havens eight.

The West-Central freshman game, originally scheduled for next Friday, has been moved to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Central.

The varsity and JV games will still be held Friday at Central, starting at 6 p.m.

Kingsley 66
Suttons Bay 36

Kingsley improved to 3-1 in the Northwest Conference with a 66-36 win over Suttons Bay.

Ann Marie Sanchez led Kingsley (6-3) with 20 points. She hit six 3-pointers. Lexi Benton added 14 and Emily Fasel 13. Kim Berreth pulled down nine rebounds.

Olivia Raftshol scored 26 points for Suttons Bay.

Cadillac Frosh 41

The Traverse City West freshmen boys beat Cadillac 44-41.

Derek Diver led the Titans (3-3, 2-1) with 13 points.

HOCKEY

Bay Reps 6
Capital Patriots 1

Six different players scored goals as the Bay Reps defeated the Capital Area Patriots 6-1.

Dustin Derrer, Michael Elliott, Chris Craig, Sam Savage, Zach Hill and Troy Huhta netted the goals. Saraya Uitelught was in goal.

The Reps (6-7) led 2-1 after two periods.

NW Warriors 6
GR S. Christian 5

Kyle Zelinski scored three goals to power the Northwest Warriors to a 6-5 win over Grand Rapids South Christian.

Drew Black added two goals and Connor Lehn one for the Warriors (3-10), who led 2-1 and 4-3 after the first two periods. Tyler Jensen had 22 saves in goal.

The Warriors lost to Lansing Catholic 4-0 on Friday night.

Brother Rice 6
TC Central 2

Birmingham Brother Rice defeated Traverse City Central 6-2.

The Warriors topped West 8-1 on Friday.

No other details were available.

BOWLING

West tops Central; Glen Lake now 4-0

Traverse City West Green rallied to take a game lead over rival Traverse City Central at Timber Lanes on Saturday.

The Titans (4-0, 1-0), led by Zak Edwardson (420 series), pulled out a 16-14 win over the Trojans (3-1, 1-1). They were down 8-11 after the first regular game, but took the lead in Division I-II by winning eight of the nine second game points. Christian Vreeland (401) led the Trojans.

West will face Glen Lake next. The Lakers also moved to 4-0, 3-0 in the Division III-IV, by beating Elk Rapids (1-3, 1-1) 19-11. Glen Lake's Caleb Abbot (365 series) led both teams. Justin Veliquette's 357 paced the Elks.

St Francis moved to 3-1, 3-0 in Division III-IV by beating TC Prep 30-0. Spencer Schmerheim led the Glads with a 344 set.

TC Christian (2-2, 2-2) beat Bellaire (0-2, 1-3) 17-13. Andy Tuck led the Sabres with a 390 series. Bellaire's Jeff Odom had a 205 game in the loss. The West Gold (2-2, 0-1) beat Benzie (1-3, 0-3) 25-5. Steve Tater rolled a 211 game in the win.

In the girls division, the Titan Green (3-0, 1-0) beat the Titan Gold (2-1, 0-1) 26-4. Ashley Parent had a 392 series in the win Breanna Bitely rolled a 195 game in the loss.

The Lady Trojans blanked Glen Lake (0-3, 0-0) 30-0 to keep pace with West Green. Central's Katie Vreeland led both teams with a 381 series.

The Titan Green and the Trojans will face off Wednesday night at Wilderness Crossings.

Bellaire moved to 1-0 in Division III-IV and 2-1 overall after beating St. Francis (0-2, 0-3) 24-6. Benzie (2-1, 1-0) beat the vacant team 27-3.

In boys JV, the Gladiators (3-0, 3-0) beat Bellaire (1-2, 1-2) 28-2 behind Josh Kurtz, who had a 398 series. Central (2-1, 2-1) beat Elk Rapids (1-2, 1-2) 25.5-4.5 and West (2-1, 2-1) beat the vacant veam.
